Grief & Loss

“Grieving takes place after any sort of loss but most powerfully, after the death of someone we love. Often, grieving takes place in stages and different emotions are experienced during the different stages. However, not everyone experiences the same stages or feelings, nor with the same intensity.”

Grief Symptoms

Grief is not just one feeling but a whole succession of feelings which take a while to get through and which cannot be hurried. According to Elisabeth Kübler-Ross & David Kessler, there are six stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance, finding meaning. The grief journey is never linear. Coping With Bereavement

In the few hours or days following the death of a close relative or friend, some may show no emotions due to the hectic arrangement of the funeral. This numbness may be replaced by a strong yearning for the dead person. For others, this numbness may be replaced by agitation. They may find it difficult to relax or concentrate and this may even affect their sleep. Some may feel agitation or anger towards self or others. Another common emotion that surfaces is guilt as there are a lot of “what-ifs” questions that could surface.  Over time, some may start to isolate themselves from others.
